how to scan film at home.

your negatives. your scanner. your files.

why scan at home

once you're developing your own film, scanning is the last thing standing between you and your photos. do it yourself and you control all of it: the crop, the color, the resolution, the files.

you also stop waiting on a lab, and you start to learn what your negatives actually look like before any software gets involved. that's the part that makes you better. the lab's scan is someone else's read on your photo. your scan is yours.

it pays for itself, too. lab scans run a few dollars a roll and pile up fast if you shoot a lot. a scanner is one purchase, and after that every roll you develop at home is basically free to digitize.

what you need
  • a film scanner. a dedicated scanner like the plustek opticfilm 8100 is the 35mm workhorse, around $300 to $400. a flatbed with a film holder, like the epson v600 (around $250), is the flexible alternative.
  • scanning software. silverfast, vuescan, or the epsonscan software that ships with the scanner. any of the three will get you there.
  • a clean, dust-free workspace. this matters more than which scanner you buy. a $400 scanner can't outrun a dusty desk.
the process
  1. mount. blow the dust off first, then load the strip into the holder, emulsion side down.
  2. preview. run a quick preview scan to set the frame and crop each shot.
  3. set resolution. 2400 to 3600 dpi is plenty for prints and sharing. go to 7200 only if you're archiving or printing big.
  4. scan. let it run. a dedicated scanner does one frame at a time, so this is the slow part. put on a record.
  5. adjust. basic exposure and color balance in the software, or export flat and finish in lightroom. keep it light here.

a full-res 35mm scan at 3600 dpi is roughly a 30 to 50 mb tiff, so keep an eye on drive space once you're archiving a lot of rolls.

short version: if you only shoot 35mm, go dedicated. if you shoot multiple formats or want to scan old prints too, go flatbed.

common scanning mistakes
  • dust. it's always dust. blow off the film and the holder every single time and you'll save hours of spot-removal later.
  • scanning too low. you can always make a file smaller, you can never add detail back, so scan a little higher than you think you need.
  • over-editing in the scanner software. get a clean, flat scan first, then do the real editing in post where you can undo things.
  • forgetting to set the film type. tell the software whether it's a color negative, black and white, or a slide, or the colors and contrast come out wrong before you've even started.
which file format?

scan to tiff if you plan to edit much, because it holds more information and survives heavy adjustments. jpeg is fine for a quick share or a contact sheet, but it throws away a little data every time you save. a common workflow is to scan flat to tiff, edit in lightroom, then export jpegs for the web.

for resolution, think about the final use, not the biggest number your scanner offers. 2400 dpi already gives you a file big enough for an instagram post or a small print. 3600 covers just about any print you'll actually make. 7200 is for archiving or wall-sized enlargements, and it roughly triples your scan time and file size to get there.

what about a camera scan?

you can also 'scan' by photographing your negatives with a digital camera and a macro lens, lit from behind by a bright, even light. it's fast once you're set up, and the quality is genuinely good.

the catch is the rig: you need the camera dead level to the film, a steady light source, and software to flip the negative into a positive. if you already own a mirrorless camera it's worth trying before you buy anything. if you don't, a dedicated scanner is simpler and cheaper to start with.
